The carbon stored in fossil fuels has been there for millions of years.
It is released into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide via the process
of combustion, or burning. We are burning large amounts of fossil fuels
producing huge quantities of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a gas that
contributes to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is therefore being
increased due to the extra carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuels.
